PhD Scholarship
Computational modelling of hydraulic fracture
A PhD scholarship post exists for the computational modelling, simulation, and analysis of hydraulic fracturing in
Australian coal seam geology. This multiphysics research program will develop a variational approach to fracture mechanics,
as well as associated numerical solution algorithms, to simulate three-dimensional hydraulic fracture involving complex systems
of cracks in porous geomaterials.
Candidates should have a Civil Engineering background, and have a strong interest in Computational Solid Mechanics.
Finite element experience is needed for this position. Applicants with experience in one or more of the fields of fracture mechanics,
poroelasticity, numerical analysis, and scientific computing are preferred.
Expressions of interest, along with a CV, should be submitted to Dr.
Chet Vignes Chet.Vignes@newcastle.edu.au .
The scholarship is available to commence immediately for a period of three years.
Salary Scale: AUD 30,000 – AUD 35,000 p.a.
Closing date: 13 March 2015

Call for eight (8) scholarships are open until 31st of March 2015 for
the second year of the international PhD program ''Analysis and Mitigation
of risks in Infrastructures', to be held in Portugal (http://infrarisk.tecnico.ulisboa.pt).
The program aims to analyse the main risks associated to several natural
hazards which are more common or of greater importance. It involves a
partnership between four universities (University of Lisbon, Instituto
Superior Tιcnico - IST; Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto
- FEUP; University of Minho and University of Aveiro), the National Laboratory
of Civil Engineering (LNEC) and a research unit within IST (ICIST).

Last December a 2 years project entitled “ROCKFALL HAZARD MATRIX FOR RISK REDUCTION IN MINE SITES” was
funded by the ACARP (Australian Coal Association Research Program competitive scheme), starting in 2014.
The project intends to develop a set of tools specifically designed for coal mining environments that will provide practitioners
with more rigorous guidance on rockfall management strategies.
The procedure will incorporate field observations (historical records), mitigation measures,
established analytical and numerical tools (empirical run-outs estimates, rock fall trajectory simulation),
and the latest research developments in rock fall hazard assessment and zoning (3D photogrammetry, block modelling, intensity-frequency matrix…).
We are looking for a researcher interested in a postdoctoral position within the project.
1. The position is a Post doc (or research associate) position with an academic salary rate of AUD$75.000- AUD$80.000/ year.
2. The position is offered for 18 months (with possible extension to 2 years if funding available)
3. The project will officially start in March 2014 (a start-up meeting with the funding body and the monitors will be held at end of march): I would like the post doc to start around April/May 2014
4. The project team members are: Dr. A. Giacomini, Dr. Klaus Thoeni and Dr. Cedric Lambert (from the University of Canterbury)
5. The project is funded by ACARP with the support and mentoring of Rio Tinto and Glencore mine.
6. The post doc will work very close to team members (including some periods in New Zealand with Dr. Lambert)
and mining sites/personnel in NSW and QLD, and will be involved in the supervision of a PhD student currently working on the topic.
7. A good level of speaking and writing English is requested
8. The researcher will entry in Australia with a 457 VISA (business VISA) valid for the length of the contract.
This VISA requires the IELTS English Tests (that can be easily obtained anytime if the applicant has already a good level of English).
