Panagiotis Agrafiotis

I am a postdoctoral researcher currently funded by a prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship under the HORIZON EU Research & Innovation programme. My research lies at the intersection of 3D Computer Vision & Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing, Deep Learning, and Geospatial Data Science. My goal is to push forward the state-of-the-art in these core sciences through novel methods in 3D reconstruction, machine learning and image analysis. Although my work finds particularly demanding and challenging test-beds in the underwater environment where refraction, light attenuation, turbidity and complex geometries pose unique challenges, my methods are not limited to underwater domains. I hold an Engineering Doctorate, an M. Eng. in Rural and Surveying Engineering and an M.Sc. in Geoinformatics from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), where I was awarded a full PhD scholarship. During my studies I received multiple conference travel grants and distinctions. In December 2020, my team “3[Deep]Vision” won the European GNSS Agency’s 1st Prize for Integrated Geomatics Solutions with our proposal “Bathymetry from UAV Imagery and Machine Learning.” Over the past 9 years, I have worked across Germany, Greece, Cyprus, and Poland, contributing to more than 17 EU-funded research projects in collaboration with leading academic and research institutions. I have collaborated with leading research labs including the Photogrammetric Vision Lab of the Cyprus University of Technology, the Lab of Photogrammetry at NTUA, ATHENA Research Center, and the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS). My responsibilities span algorithm design for over-water and underwater 3D reconstruction, laser scanning, image-based bathymetric mapping, seabed image analysis and survivor localization using optical and thermal imagery. To date I have authored 46 peer-reviewed publications, reviewed for 27 high-impact journals, and contributed to the organization or scientific committees of 11 ISPRS international events. My current research focus remains on image-based bathymetry of shallow waters leveraging machine learning, image processing, photogrammetry, and remote sensing while extending these advances to broader photogrammetric and computer-vision applications.
