General Information about The Town Academic Library

The Town Academic Library was founded in 1898. It is the first university library in the country which organised its collection according to the international library standards: library rules, bibliographic database, classification and shelving system, and an open access collection or close stacks depending on the case.

Today there are held and available for use :

- More than 120.000 titles of books

- More than 1500 titles of scientific journals

- More than 7000 electronic journals

- Online and CD-ROM bibliographic databases

- 20 online fulltext encyclopedias and 6 online fulltext handbooks

- The Historic Collection of the library

- The Official Gazette from 1900 up to day

- Theses and dissertations

The Town Academic Library is a library which serves the tutorial staff, the students, and the staff of the Town University, as well as students of other universities.

The aim of The Town Academic Library is to support the under-graduate and post-graduate studies, to promote the basic and applied research of the library membership, as well as to provide information to whomever interested.

 

The building of The Town Academic Library

The construction of the new building of The Town Academic Library finished, in the year 1995, with the financial aid of the Town Hall Organization. It is situated within the Town Campus. It extends to an area of 10.000 square metres. It is a six-storey building which includes reading rooms of 500 places, 30 computer workstations available to the public, and 4 photocopying machines which operate with the use of a special magnetic card provided by a coin machine.

 

Library Rules, Academic Year 2004-2005 (short version)

These rules are designed to ensure that staff, students and not registered users of The Town University, obtain the maximum benefit from the resources and the facilities of The Town Academic Library.

  • Access to and use of the resources and the facilities of the Library, within the library building, are available to everyone interested.
  • Library information resources office promotes the use of library as a learning and research tool, identifies and provides access to all forms of information and literature to all users inquiring a wide bibliographic research.
  • The following types of library membership are available: employees of the University plus Governors of the University, Visiting, Honorary and Emeritus Professors, Visiting and Honorary Fellows, Honorary Lecturers, Associate Tutors and Research Associates, students enrolled at the University. A Town Academic Library ID card and enrolment form is required to join membership.
  • No items shall be issued or services supplied without production of a valid library card. Cards shall not be transferable and the person to whom any card is issued will be held responsible for any items issued against that card unless the loss of the card is reported to the Librarian. Any loss must be reported immediately.
  • Only library membership enjoy the right to use the following resources and facilities : borrowing up to the limit of items within their category of membership, renewing and reserving material, using interlibrary loan service, accessing remotely electronic resourses.
  • All library membership enjoy the right to borrow all items of the library apart from reference material (encyclopedias, dictionaries, journals, handbooks, etc.) and items belonging to the closed stacks (Historic Collection of the Town Library & Official Gazette).
  • Only library staff may retrieve requested items for the users, from the Library’s closed stacks :
    -
    "Historic Collection of the Town Library" (open daily 10.30.- 13.30)
    - “Official Gazette” (open every Thursday 9.00.- 13.30)
  • Users should keep all personal belongings into the library lockers after entering the library.
  • Using computers presupposes a loan card provided by the library staff in the reception desk.
  • Photocopying presupposes the use of a special magnetic card which is provided by a coin machine and costs 1.50 Euro, valid for 50 photocopies.
  • In all events noise must be kept to a minimum within the library. Smoking, as well as consumption of food and drink are prohibited.
  • Users should respect Library’s property.
