Portrait of Dimitrios Sargiotis

Biography

Dr Dimitrios Sargiotis is Deputy Director of the PC Laboratories within the Digital Technology Laboratory for Technical Projects at the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), and has been a member of the School's Laboratory Teaching Staff since 2014. He joined the University in 2000 and the School in 2001, where he has also served as Information Technology Manager since then.

He was trained in computer science at Université Paris VIII, where he took the DEUG, Licence and Maîtrise and then a doctorate awarded Très honorable, and in management at Strathclyde Business School, where he received an MBA with Distinction. This combination informs the character of his research, which tends to treat information systems, organisations and engineering infrastructure as parts of a single problem.

Throughout his career, in academic, public-sector and private-sector settings, his work has joined systems architecture, data management and digital transformation to applied engineering questions. His current research concerns the use of artificial intelligence in civil engineering and urban systems: resilient and smart cities, digital twins, intelligent transportation, sustainable infrastructure, and the governance of the data on which these systems depend.

A consistent thread in this work is the claim that efficiency gains in intelligent infrastructure are difficult to sustain without fairness, transparency and privacy. Several of his recent books accordingly treat ethical and human-centric AI as a design requirement of engineering systems, alongside reliability and cost.

He is the sole author of seventeen monographs with Springer Nature, comprising 137 chapters, published or forthcoming between 2024 and 2027. They range from a practitioner's guide to data governance and a 999-page textbook on MATLAB for civil engineers to the eleven volumes of three book series (AI and the Intelligent City; AI and Green Infrastructure; AI for Human-Centric Cities) and further volumes on civil engineering, disaster resilience, construction automation and planetary sustainability. He reviews for journals including ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology and Sensors, and speaks regularly at international conferences on civil engineering, infrastructure and AI.
