Atomic and Molecular Physics

About This Class

The Atomic and Molecular Physics class is being taught in the 6th semester of SAMPS, as a compulsory class for Physics Students. The topics covered are:

Time-Dependent Pertubation Theory and description of the interaction of radiation with matter on a quantum level. Electronic transitions, electric dipole approximation and selectio rules. Multi-electron atoms, Pauli's Principle, the Variational Method, Para-Helium and Ortho-Helium, Slater Determinants, Spin-Orbitals. Approximation methods to solving many body problems, Hartree and Hartree-Fock methods, Density Functional Theory. Quantum Description of the chemical bond, bonding and anti-bonding orbitals, application in simple molecules. Hybridization of Carbon and other atoms. Molecular energy diagrams, determination of molecular eigenenergies with the Linear Combination of Atomic Orbitals (LCAO) method, the role of symmetries. Molecular spectroscopy basics. Introduction to quantum computers based on atoms or molecules.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE CONTENT

The material I have for this class is notes that I kept from various sources (books, class power points etc.). I took this class during the academic year 2021-2022, with professor Dr. Leonidas Tsetseris. The notes are in english, and can be downloaded here:
