The Monument of Zalongon

The George Zongolopoulos Foundation has commissioned the Laboratory of Photogrammetry
to geometrically document the Zalongon Monument, which was constructed at the edge of a
steep hill by the famous Greek sculptor, in order to commemorate the sacrifice of Greek
women who preferred to dance to death than getting dihonoured by the conqueror in
December 1803.
The Monmument had suffered some damage due mainly to frost and the 3D model to be
produced would enable the restoration of the damaged parts. For this task contemporary
digital photogrammetric and laser scanning techniques were implemented. Apart from the
3D model, orthophotos at a scale of 1:20 were also produced.
Based on existing old photographs the 3D model was augmented with the missing parts with
the help of relevant 1:5 models which were scanned with a structured light scanner and
enabled the virtual restoration.
