August 23rd 2009 - a day to remember

Between August 21st and August 24th 2009, a huge forest fire burned a very big part of Northeast Attica region.

Dionyssos Satellite Observatory, located in Agios Petros-Dionyssos, at the Northeast slopes of mount Penteli,  took a direct hit (for the 3rd time after 1995 &1998) at Sunday  the 23rd around 12 noon. The fire burned around 3/4 of the Observatories area.

During the fire's sweep, the temperature at the weather station rose to the "super" level of 50.9 degrees Celsius at 12:23pm.

The only thing burned from our weather equipment was a cable from the rain gauge.

Almost every power or telecom poll was burned making even access difficult sometimes. So we lost power for 3 days  and still out of telecoms (Aug. 27).

We hope to be back online the next coming days.
